He thought that, given Purple’s character, she would either pretend not to hear out of shyness or scold him with a feigned annoyance. Instead, Purple nodded very seriously and said firmly, “You don’t know how much I regretted getting shot. When I was unconscious, my mind was fuzzy with the thought, ‘What if I die like this? I haven’t married you yet; if I die now, it would be such a loss.’”
She closed her eyes as if talking to herself, “I can’t die, I can’t die… I want to marry you. Even when I die, I want ‘Wife of Alexander Summers’ carved on my tombstone. So right now, I absolutely cannot die.”

Alexander’s lips curved upwards, feeling like he should smile, yet his eyes burned with warmth.

An indescribable emotion filled his chest, his breathing hot. He wanted to hug her but was afraid of hurting her. After hesitating for a while, he finally took hold of Purple’s hand.

“Okay, we’ll get married,” he said, holding her hand and kissing it gently, his voice husky, “Once you’ve recovered, we’ll get married.”

He couldn’t wait any longer.

Purple’s relief at the promise was like letting go of a burden.

Purple was relieved, and then she asked him, “What about May Francis?”

“She lost too much blood and couldn’t be saved,” Alexander said. “Nathaniel got her drunk; she probably didn’t suffer much when she died.”

Purple fell silent.

Both she and Alexander knew that the original Purple had died from suicide by cutting her wrists after getting drunk.

Nathaniel plotted for May Francis to die in this manner, then had Suzanne Saunders drown again. What was he trying to achieve? Maybe it was just as he said: either live as his wife or die…

Even becoming a ghost to stay by his side was preferable to marrying Alexander.

The happier and more joyful their lives were, the more it signified shame, mockery, and pain for Nathaniel.
